YOUTH PROGRAM 98
The summer of 1998 was the
second year of the Club's kayak introductory program for kids. The intent of this program
is to provide a kayaking experience for kids 11 to 18 years of age who's life
circumstances would likely not allow them the opportunity to try this exciting sport.
A group of experienced Club members trained in River Rescue and First Aide worked one on
one with eight to ten youths per session through three evenings of kayak introduction.
Starting with that first soaking in Chadburn lake, the youths learn to be upside down in
their kayak and do a wet exit. By the end of the third evening they're doing multiple runs
through the shoot at the intake on the Yukon River.
New this year was the involvement of the RCMP. Three of their members joined our group
of program leaders. Their experience with working with youth is a strong asset
to the program. Financial support was also provided by funding river rescue training. This
partnership will help ensure the longevity of the program. We look forward to working
together in the future.
